Join us in our study of the American literary classic, The Red Badge of Courage. This high school literature course explores the historical and literary time period, known as Realism, during the civil war era. A “youth” who joins the Union army seeking romantic and heroic adventures finds himself questioning his own actions and thoughts and examining his motives. By the end of the story, we witness a boy who transforms into a maturing young man.
This course emphasizes character analysis of our main character, Henry Fleming, while looking at other literary components and techniques.
The class examines and practices the following concepts and skills:
- author background and historical background information in context to the literary period of Realism and the influence of Naturalism
- story elements – setting, plot, plot map, character analysis, theme, point of view, tone
- literary devices – imagery, symbolism, allegory, similes, metaphors, personification, irony, diction
