Description
This January winter nature study sample uses observations seen in January as a jumping off point for science topics and concepts found in Winter.
In this sample nature study, taken from the Winter Nature Study and More and the Nature Studies, Nature Journals, and Poetry Through the Year ebooks, you will explore:
- Trees in Winter – Different ways to identify them without leaves, deciduous, evergreen, and coniferous trees.
- Astronomy – Winter Constellations and the Aurora Borealis
Other topics included in the full Winter Nature Study and More for January, not in the sample for January include
- Owls – birds of prey, food chains and webs, and owl pellet dissection
- Nocturnal Animals and different facets of these topics and how they relate to winter
Poetry for each topic is included first (because a lot of poetry centers around what is seen in nature).
A suggested book list follows and a list of questions to ask and answer and observations to be made while taking a nature walk.
Once, you return home, there is a list of online activity suggestions, interactive experiences, and experiment and activity ideas to try.
To finish your study, there are extension topic suggestions to look more deeply into what you have already been studying with more advanced scientific topics and concepts. For example, under Nocturnal Animals, you can do a deeper study on bats, specifically, and their adaptations to the dark and do a study on sonar.
Get outdoors, have fun exploring nature, and study your science at the same time! Everything is laid out for you!
This book is just a quick example of what you can find in the more inclusive Winter Nature Study and More with 3 months of study for December, January, and February, and also the year long nature study – Nature Studies, Nature Journals, and Poetry Through the Year.
